If you come from exit “Modena Nord” of the Autostrada del Sole
Once you have paid your toll you proceed for some 400 mt and at the roundabout you stay on your right. After a further 400 mt you proceed again on your right (road signs are: Sassuolo, Abetone, Cimone). You are on Modena’s Western Ring Road. You make and exit at exit 18 (road signs: Abetone e Cimone). You proceed on a road that runs parallel to the Autostrada del Sole. You go all the way to the end of the parallel road. At the end there is a roundabout. You take the first turn to the right (road sign Cimone) and you are on the Nuova Estense.
From that point it takes 40 km to get to the Ducal Stables and you follow road signs for “Pavullo” which are present throughout the drive.
When the road starts climbing on the first hills there is a tract of some 15 km where you will not be able to use your cellular phone. Cell phones will function again once you get to the top of the hills, shortly before you reach the first deviation for Serramazzoni.
Once you have passed the second deviation for Serramazzoni the road becomes narrower. You will first pass an industrial zone (Sant’Antonio) and you proceed for some two km more until you see the city sign “Pavullo nel Frignano”. You immediately take the first road left which goes to city centre (road signs for Hospital, Restaurants, etc.).
After just 100 meters you take again a road to your left (via Virgilio) which climbs rather steeply uphill. On your right and your left you see a number of recent buildings. After a further 300 meters the road makes a U turn to the right and 200 meters later a 90° turn to the left. From there on you always go uphill. When on your right you see the sign “Parco Ducale” and a small fountain you will see farther ahead a road that climbs rather steeply with a sign of “no through traffic”. You proceed along that road. You first have two villas on each side of the road, then woods on your right. At the first turn to the right you will see on your left a large red building and the upper part of a stone building: those are the Ducal Stables. 300 more meters and you have reached your destination.
If you get lost, ask directions for “Casa Scarino”. That has been for more than a century the name given to the very small “borgo” where the Ducal Stables are located.
